Agreement needed on Defence Wall

21 September, 2007

agreement-defence-wall The wall could stop scenes like this Plans for a proposed £50m Flood Defence Scheme for the River Trent could be scrapped if an agreement for a defence wall in Attenborough cannot be agreed.

The Environment Agency needs planning permission for the wall which would be built in front of the village green.

Protestors include those who use the green for football, cricket and bowls, and say they want the wall to go behind the village green.

Those against the scheme are urging Broxtowe Borough Council to reject the proposals - which include flood prevention work to protect 17 miles of shoreline along the River Trent.

Plans could be shelved

However the Environment Agency has said the plan could be shelved if permission was not granted.

Paul Lockhart from The Environment Agency, said: "It is up to the planning authority to decide whether they go ahead.

"If we don't start next year because of a planning delay then the money is likely to be allocated somewhere else. There is a risk it would delay it by more than a year or it could be more significant than that."

Next month

Broxtowe Borough Council will discuss the issue next month.

Planning permission has been granted by local authorities for the other sections of the route.

The flood defence scheme would run from Colwick, just north of Nottingham, to Sawley near the M1 and would affect about 16,000 homes.
