Broadgate Artwork Unveiled

05 September, 2007

artwork-unveiled-36 The Mayor of Broxtowe Cllr Brian Wombwell officially unveiled two new artworks that have recently been installed on Broadgate Park, Beeston.

Local residents and all those who were involved in producing the final artworks were invited to attend the prestigious event and enjoyed the live entertainment by the Hot Club Trio playing Parisian style café music.

The striking new artwork features are the culmination of nearly a year’s consultation, design workshops and manufacture and have been created by Nottinghamshire artist Hilary Cartmel in conjunction with local schools, groups and residents.

Funding

Funding for the project of £19,000 was secured through the Greater Nottingham Partnership.

The project began in October 2006 with a steering group made up of representatives from Beeston Business Forum, Beeston Civic Society, Beeston Local History Society, Beeston Bowls Club, Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, architects and town planners.

The process of designing and making the sculptures began in January 2007.

Community Involvement

During the design process Hilary worked with two local schools; Beeston Fields Primary and John Clifford School and visited residents at the Regency Court Sheltered Housing scheme in order to collect the ideas and reminiscences from the residents.

There were guided tours around the Humber works factory and meetings with members of the local Civic and Historical Societies.
