Adult Learners form Community Group

05 December, 2007

bccv-group-49 Members of the Beeston Community Conservation Volunteers (BCCV) Adult Learners who took a course which included carrying out projects at Attenborough Nature Reserve have formed an Independent Community Group.

Six of the successful learners who undertook the Environmental NVQ courses at Attenborough Nature Reserve enjoyed their course so much, that they have formed an independent Community Group - Beeston Community Conservation Volunteers (BCCV).

Secured Several Local Projects

Students Neil Rowe, Ian Young, Mike Nichol, Andy Husbands, Paul Williamson and Judith Overton has already secured several local projects, working on their first activity at Beeston Resource Centre, where they have built a footpath around the grounds to enable clients of the Centre to enjoy the outdoors whilst using the facility.

There are plans to continue the involvement with the Centre by building raised beds and other outdoor structures. The group is also involved in helping the local Scout Group clear the grounds around their HQ building and working with them to develop a wildlife friendly garden.

BTCV

The courses are provided through a long standing and successful partnership with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), which provides practical conservation based training across the community.

The Nature Reserve was a newly launched venue for delivery of the courses in Autumn 2006, making this an incredible start and these results overtook national success rates by a significant margin.

Certificates

At a celebration event at the Nature Reserve, learners were presented with their certificates by Castle College’s Vice-Principal, Learning and Development, Sarah Dennis, who praised the hard work and dedication demonstrated by all involved.

Dave Ashurst , BTCV National Training Development Manager, described the Attenborough provision as ‘outstanding’ and talked of the high quality teaching and learning that takes place in a magnificent ‘outdoor classroom’.

He said: “The provision has not only had some fantastic educational outcomes but has actually changed the lives of all participants. Learners have improved their confidence levels, a strong bond has enabled problems to be shared and supported, and individuals suffering physical and mental health issues have all made notable improvements.”
