Beeston cop gets award

A Policeman, based at Beeston, is to be recognised for his act of bravery in preventing a woman jumping from a motorway bridge.

Sergeant Kelvin Stephens will receive a Testimonial on Parchment from the Royal Humane Society.

The incident happened in April 2006, at J27 of the M1 motorway. Sgt Stephens grabbed the woman’s arm and dragged her to safety.

A spokesman for the Royal Humane Society said: "If Sgt Stephens hadn't acted as he did this woman could have fallen on to the motorway during a busy mid-afternoon period and I dread to think what could have happened.

"He richly deserves the award he is to receive. Quite apart from saving the life of the woman concerned, he may well have averted a tragedy which could have claimed the lives of others."
