A mischievous Stapleford pooch has boosted the funds of leading veterinary charity, PDSA, by seven pence, after vets found four coins rattling around inside her stomach!Vets at the Dunkirk-based PDSA PetAid hospital have named Staffordshire Bull Terrier Black, as their first official canine fundraiser thanks to her kind donation.
Black, aptly named because of her glossy black fur, was actually brought in to Nottingham PDSA PetAid hospital for treatment for a severe infection of her uterus when the coins were subsequently discovered!
X-Rays
It was when PDSA vets x-rayed Black’s abdomen to confirm their diagnosis that the x-ray revealed some strange circular objects in her stomach.
Surgeon, Rupert Symes, said: “We were all intrigued to find out what Black had swallowed and were very surprised to find the coins. It wasn’t these that had made her ill, but if they had been left in her stomach they may eventually have caused other problems.
“As for the uterus infection we were able to treat that by removing her uterus and she has made a good recovery. If she hadn’t been ill with this infection, the coins may have gone unnoticed for quite some time!”
Scavenging
It is not known how or when the four-year-old pooch gobbled down the coins, but owner, Dougie McPherson, thinks she may have got her paws on the coins at home, as Black is well known for scavenging.
He added: “I am very grateful to PDSA for helping Black. I couldn’t believe it when the vets found the coins in her stomach – what a shock! We’re now extra vigilant and don’t leave anything lying around that she might get her paws on.”
