Boots introduces traffic light system

28 May, 2007

Boots has become the latest high street retailer to adopt the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) recommended approach to front-of-pack labelling, and traffic light colours can now be seen on a range of products in Boots’ stores across the country.

The traffic light colours system enables customers to see at a glance if food has high, medium or low amounts of fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt in 100g of the food.

In addition to the traffic light colours, the amount of these nutrients present in a portion or serving of the food is also labelled along with the number of grams of fat, saturated fat, salt and sugars in what the manufacturer or retailer suggests as a 'serving' of the food.

Boots Nutritionist, Vicky Pennington said: “We’ve introduced traffic light colour-coding to help our customers make healthier choices.

“You can see at a glance whether the levels of calories, fat, saturated fat, salt and sugars are high, medium or low, in line with the approach recommended by the FSA.

“This helps our customers put healthy eating into practice when buying their lunch.”
