Bramcote residents needed to share ideas
21 February, 2008
Local people will have a chance to have their input on designs for a new stained glass window for the Old Tower at Bramcote along with sculptural seating for a new community garden within its grounds.
On Hand
Sculptor Andy Smith and the ESCAPE stained-glass company will be on hand at the event to discuss ideas with the local community who will also able sculpt or draw their own designs.
The event will take place from 10am to 4pm at the Memorial Hall, Church Street, Bramcote.
A representative of the Bat Society will be bringing live bats for further inspiration for attendees and the Arts Development Manager from Broxtowe Borough Council will also be in attendance.
History
The church tower contains features from both the 14th and 15th centuries and a small 13th Century chapel existed before this. The remains of the church were abandoned in favour of the newly built St Michael’s and all Angels' Church in 1861, and its nave and chancel were demolished in 1862.
The work forms part of a wider £50,000 project which aims to create a medieval-style community garden in the churchyard and restore some of its features.
Funded
The scheme is being funded by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Building Better Communities (BBC) initiative and an Awards for All Lottery grant secured by the Bramcote Conservation Society.
Senior Officer Historic Buildings Officer Jason Mordan said: “Inspiration for designs will be based on the history of the tower, myths and legends along with flowers and wildlife in the churchyard including bats that live in the tower.
“We encourage people to attend to give their visual ideas for this innovative community project.”
BBC is a wide ranging five-year programme which will see £25 million invested in making the county a better place to live and work.
