Broadgate work of art to be unveiled
22 August, 2007
Mayor of Broxtowe Cllr Brian Wombwell will officially unveil the work and at the same time be treated to live entertainment by the Hot Club Trio playing Parisian style café music.
Local residents and all those who have been involved in producing the final artworks are invited to attend the prestigious event.
Culmination
The striking new artwork features are the culmination of nearly a year’s consultation, design workshops and manufacture and have been created by Nottinghamshire artist Hilary Cartmel in conjunction with local schools, groups and residents.
Funding for the project of £19,000 was secured through the Greater Nottingham Partnership.
Beginning
The project began in October 2006 with a steering group made up of representatives from Beeston Business Forum, Beeston Civic Society, Beeston Local History Society, Beeston Bowls Club, Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, architects and town planners.
Five artists were invited to tender for the work and the steering group awarded the commission to Hilary Cartmel.
The process of designing and making the sculptures began in January 2007.
Local schools
During the design process Hilary worked with two local schools; Beeston Fields Primary and John Clifford School and visited residents at the Regency Court Sheltered Housing scheme in order to collect the ideas and reminiscences from the residents.
There were guided tours around the Humber works factory and meetings with members of the local Civic and Historical Societies.
Poetry
There was also a poetry competition about the artworks run by Beeston Express and the selected poem by Sharon Bilby is integrated into one of the finished sculptures.
Writers from the prestigious Nottingham Writers studio were also involved and local writer Richard Pilgrim, who grew up in Beeston, has written a poem that has also been forged into the sculptures.
