Sports Celebration Evening

broxtowe-council-sports-awards-2008 Over 300 people attended the Third Annual Broxtowe Sports Celebration Evening held at the New Pearson Centre, Beeston.

The event was hosted by Broxtowe Borough Council and the Broxtowe School Sport Partnership awards were presented to a range of local people and organisations for their contribution to sports in the Borough.

The evening was made even more exciting with a range of special guest presenters and the entertainment on offer. v Presentations were made by Bryan Steel, Olympic pursuit silver and bronze medallist cyclist at Sydney and Athens who was born in Beeston; Dominique McClean, student at Bramcote Hills Sport and Community College; Christopher Warburton, 1,500 metre runner, sub 4 minute mile 2007, Loughborough student, resident of Beeston; Viv Oliver, veteran Sprinter, previous world vets record holder 100m, 200m and 400m.v The Broxtowe Sports Celebration Evening reviews local sport including local teams, clubs, elite performers and complete beginners. Nominations are made by the public and this years award categories and winners are:

School Sports Team of the Year
Larkfields Junior Athletics Team

Sportsperson of the Year
George Pinner (Beeston Hockey Club)

Disabled Sportsperson of the Year
Lawrence Fitch (Beeston)

Club Sports Team of the Year
Awsworth U11 Kwik Cricket Team

Sports Coach of the Year
Grahame Mansell-Grace (Beeston Hockey Club)

School Sports Leader of the Year
Tom Parr (Stapleford)

Volunteer of the Year
Judith Keeling (Borrowash)

School Sports Programme Initiative of the Year
Bramcote Hills Sport and Community College – Gill Soulsby – Lunch Time Leaders

Community Sports Programme Initiative of the Year – Roll of Honour
Priory Celtic FC

As well as the award winners, 6 local sports people received a grant aid cheque from the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Brian Wombwell on the evening from the 16 approved this financial year. Those who attended were:

Kelly Dreschler Ice Hockey
Richard Hill 800 metre athlete
Simon Wilson Fencer

Performances included cheerleaders, L Manifique; Little Pumas Martial Arts a group of young people aged 4 and 5 years from Eastwood Community Sports Centre, Natalie Jaqcues, trampoline coach ranked 6th female in UK 2007 from Chilwell Olympia and John Whetton Freestyle Footballer, Hucknall Town Football Club.
