Groups secure funding to benefit community

Ten Groups in the Borough are celebrating after being successful in securing funds this year from the Broxtowe Action Fund (BAF).

Funding has been given for a wide range of projects ranging from creating a pond area at an allotment site to buying new teapots.

The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Brian Wombwell recently presented cheques to the groups.

Grants up to £2,000

The Broxtowe Action Fund provides grants up to £2,000 to a diverse range of non-profit making organisations for projects that promote and benefit the well being of Broxtowe Borough.

In 2007 the fund has awarded £18,500 to two rounds in October and March. The fund has been running for 7 years and 146 grants have been given during this time totalling £138,687.

Members of the Broxtowe Partnership

Five partners contribute to the fund including Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County PCT, The Boots Company, The Co-operative Group and Nottinghamshire County Council. All the organisations are members of the Broxtowe Partnership.

The groups to receive this year’s awards are as follows:

• Hickings Lane Skateboard Group - Hickings Lane Skateboard Project - £1,000
To provide artwork for the sideboards of the ramps at the newly improved skate park.

• Midlands Womens Aid - Outreach Activities - £800
To fund activities away from the refuge for children. Day trips to various locations including Twycross Zoo and Sherwood Forest.

• HeadStart - Chat and Eat - £325
To provide room hire and refreshments for a self help group for people with mental health problems.

• Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust – Flashes and Scrapes at Aldercar - £1,515
To improve an area of open water at the reserve through clearing of the water scrapes and rejuvenate the reed bed habitat.

• Yoga Health Institute - Yoga for Health - £678
To run yoga classes over 20 weeks targeting BME community, disabled people and the elderly.

• Chilwell Community Association - Development of Inham Nook Community Centre - £1,568
To encourage more use of the community centre by purchasing new furniture. Also to set up a homework/ After Schools Club.

• Dovecote Lane Adult Mental Health Service - Calm Water Project - £1,010
To work with members to create a pond area at the allotment site, including a solar powered water fountain, rock boulders, water plants and seating.

• Trowell Women’s Institute - £100
To purchase stainless steel teapots and milk jugs to be used at community events.

• Broxtowe Community Celebration Group - Broxtowe Community Celebration Event - £2,000
To provide funding towards the running of the event held in Beeston. The grant would go towards activities, publicity and food.

• Broxtowe Play Forum - Broxtowe Play Forum Website Project - £1,093
To develop a website to enable the forum to reach groups previously less able to access the resources and support it offers.
