Canadian looking for old friends
20 July, 2007
Dave Thompson from Niagara Falls, Ontario recalls happy memories of visiting his grandparents in Leyton Crescent, Beeston and is keen to make contact with some of the friends he made there.
Memories
He takes up the story: “My mother Janice (maiden name - McLean) lived with her brother David and parents at 37 Leyton Crescent, Beeston when she was young.
“They moved there when she was about eight-years-old attending Beeston Rylands Junior School before going on to a couple of all girl schools when she turned 11.
“One school she attended was named Beeston County Secondary Modern School for girls.
Visited from Holland
“I was about 10 - 12 years old when we visited over to England to my grandmother’s place from Holland where our family was stationed from 1969 - 1972 with the Canadian Air Force.
“My grandmother was a caretaker at the University close by, not real close by as I remember we had to bus to it.
Making Friends
“While in Beeston I chummed with and played with a couple of lads whom I remember both lived on Leyton Crescent and whom I would really like to reconnect with or find out about if at all possible.
“The one lad, whom I can't remember his name, lived at 19 Leyton Crescent, which was directly across from my grandparents place it was the third house in maybe, on the left.
“I do remember he had quite strict parents and my mom remembers there being two or three children in the family.
Other residents
“On one side of them was a family called the Downeys in Number 17, my mom remembers the family name Shand at Number 25 with boys named John and Graham she thinks. At Number 31, were the Woodwards of which my mom thinks that Noreen Woodward still lives there.
Neal Armstrong
“The other lad I'm thinking of lived directly across the street from the top end of the Cul De Sac - Neal or Neil Armstrong, I am pretty sure of it. It was coincidental and I found it amusing in that he had the same name as the astronaut.
“Now I am pretty sure that was his name and I can't see why I would have that name in my mind if I wasn't correct... however I may be wrong but I don't think so. We're going back at least 35 years here!
“His house was directly across from the end of the Cul De Sac, maybe one house to the right off centre.”
