Improvement work begins on canal towpath
08 January, 2008
The path which links Beeston Canal to the River Trent at Beeston Rylands will be widened and enhancements will be made to the walking facilities around Beeston Marina. Some footpaths will be temporarily closed and the public will be informed of alternative routes on site.
Completed in March
The scheme, which is due to be completed in March, has been funded by Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, Broxtowe Borough Council, East Midlands Development Agency, the Greater Nottingham Partnership, and British Waterways.
Early next year Nottingham City Council will be further enhancing a mile long stretch of The Big Track – which is a ten mile towpath loop which starts at Beeston Canal, runs through Wilford and returns to Beeston Canal.
This path will be widened so it can be better accessed by people with mobility difficulties and improved signage and access points will be created for walkers. This work will be carried out in two stages during the course of the year.
Big Track
Gary Wood, Service Manager for Highways at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “The earlier phases of work on the Big Track have been a great success.
“Surveys have shown that enhancements to the towpath from Beeston Rylands to Nottingham City Centre in 2006 led to a 25 per cent increase in usage along the route.
It is thought that these next stages of improvements will further enhance this leisure network for local people.”
