Cardboard cartons to be recycled
16 July, 2007
The Mayor of the Borough, Councillor Brian Wombwell, the Borough Council’s mascot Brock the Badger and Fraser Macintyre from Recresco officially opened the first of five new carton recycling banks at Tesco, Swiney Way, Toton.Broxtowe Council has joined forces with Recresco to collect paper-based milk, juice and liquid food cartons for recycling. The new collection points offer a viable and affordable solution for beverage carton collection by combining cartons with its long-established plastic bottle collection system.
Other sites
Other recycling sites in NG9 which accept cardboard cards are Sainsbury’s at Beeson and the Co-op at Stapleford.
Cartons are currently not able to go in the green-lidded bin for kerbside collection of dry recyclables.
The new banks which take the cartons for recycling will also accept plastic bottles and will be clearly marked ‘ For Plastic bottles and cartons’ To recycle these items all the public needs to do is rinse out the cardboard carton and remove the lid.
The cartons will be recycled into heavy duty cardboard – such as cardboard inner tubes for carpet. Cardboard carton recycling is fairly new to the UK and the first collections took place at the end of September 2002.
Broxtowe Borough Council residents are now recycling more than ever before and it is hoped that they will enthusiastically take up this new recycling opportunity to help the Borough 2007 achieve its highest recycling rate yet in 2007.
