More recycling banks for cardboard

05 October, 2007

Cardboard recycling banks The introduction of special recycling banks to recycle cardboard cartons in the borough have proved so popular that more new ones have been installed.

Broxtowe Borough Council in conjunction with Tetra Pak and the carton industry body ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment) are installing more recycling sites able to recycle cardboard cartons.

The new banks provide a facility to recycle paper-based drinks and liquid food cartons such as those made by Tetra Pak and can now be found at the following sites in NG9:

• Sainsbury’s, Beeston
• Tesco, Toton
• Co-op, Stapleford

Chilwell Olympia and Leyton Crescent Recreation Ground, Beeston Rylands take cardboard cartons only.

The banks which are already in use and which accept both plastic bottles and paper-based drinks cartons have collected nearly a tonne of material for recycling so far.

Did you know?

Each year UK beverage carton manufacturers produce 60,000 tonnes of paper-based cartons for milk, juice, sauces and other liquid food/drinks. This equates to around 2.3 kg of cartons per household, which could be recycled instead of thrown in the rubbish bin.

Once collected, the cartons are taken away and baled. They are then transported to a recycling mill where they are turned into a number of different products ranging from plasterboard liner to high-strength paper bags and envelopes.

Broxtowe householders are also advised to keep and eye open for the new autumn waste and recycling leaflet due for distribution in November. This will give further details on cardboard carton recycling. For more information please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 7777.
