Cars left to defrost are stolen

12 December, 2008

cars-stolen-defrost Nottinghamshire Police are again warning motorists not to leave their cars running and unattended as the cold weather continues.

Drivers are still starting their vehicles and leaving them to warm up while they either go back into their homes or defrost their windows, and two vehicles have been stolen in the Beeston and Giltbrook areas.

Bramcote Hills

The first car, a silver-green Renault Laguna, was stolen from an address in Bramcote Hills at around 0800hrs on Wednesday, December 3, after the owner had left it running while he went back into his house.

The second was a white Vauxhall Corsa van, which was stolen from outside the owner’s home in Giltbrook at around 0745hrs on Thursday, December 11.

Insp John Lees, local area commander for the Eastwood area, said: “People are starting their engines to de-ice windows and warm up the vehicle, but just because it’s cold, it doesn’t mean that criminals aren’t out and about.

”couple of seconds”

“It only takes a couple of seconds for them to get in and drive off, so leaving your vehicle unattended with the engine running is making life easy for them.

“And insurance companies often won’t pay out if a vehicle is stolen while it has been left unattended with the engine running. They expect the driver to secure their own vehicle.

“Simple steps, like leaving the house a few minutes earlier and taking your keys with you if you get out of your vehicle, can stop you from becoming a victim of crime.”
