Takeaway fined over food safety offences

19 September, 2007

The proprietor of Honey Dew Chinese Cuisine at West Point Chilwell, Mr Kin Lei, pleaded guilty at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Monday, September 17, 2007 to eight food safety offences.

The prosecution by Broxtowe Borough followed an inspection carried out on October 17, 2006 by an Environmental Health Officer from the Council's Environmental Health Department.

At the time of the visit, the premises was found to be dirty and disorganised, with food being stored in old and dirty containers. Foods that must be refrigerated to keep them safe, such as cooked meats and rice were being stored at room temperature.

No procedures in place

Those preparing food in the business had not been appropriately trained in food hygiene and the business had no procedures in place to ensure that good practice was followed and that cleaning was regular and systematic.

The District Judge awarded at £3,000 fine and £500 costs against Mr Lei. Mr Lei admitted that they had been extremely busy and things had got out of hand.

Commenting on the prosecution Councillor Jacky Williams, Chair of the Housing, Health and Leisure Select Committee, emphasised that unsatisfactory standards in food premises would not be tolerated.

She added that officers of the Environmental Health Department were available for advice and would prefer to visit and assist businesses to prevent major problems arising rather than resorting to legal action after the event.
