Community Garden to be created
05 August, 2007
The Stapleford and District Garden Holders Association will create a community garden on two plots which have been unoccupied for ten years.
One of the allotments will be made into a recreation area for allotment holders with a seating area. The other will have raised beds surrounded by paving which can be adopted by disabled people or local schools.
The idea came from an event, which took place at the site in November when a bonfire and barbecue was held for the community.
Funding
Funding for the project will see £250 from the Garden Holders Association funds, £600 from the Town Council and £500 from the Nottinghamshire County Councillors Initiatives Fund.
The garden holders have agreed to carry out all work themselves.
The Town Council has also agreed to allow the association to have the two allotments free of charge.
Mayor of Broxtowe Cllr Brian Wombwell told NG9: “Stapleford Town Council have carried out various works on their five allotment sites in Stapleford over the past eight years to improve security and access.
Waiting List
“This has paid dividends as the take up of allotments which was about 50% has now risen to almost 100% with waiting lists on some of the sites.
“This has also been helped with the plethora of gardening programs on the television and the publicity surrounding healthy eating.
“The project will enhance the entrance to the site and save the council having to pay to have these two allotments cleared of weeds twice a year.”
