Councils issue statement over proposed housing development

18 January, 2008

Nottinghamshire Council leaders have joined forces to reassure the public about recent speculation on the prospects of substantial new housing development around Nottingham.

The need for new houses arises as we are all living longer, more of us live alone rather than in couples or families, and the population is growing - so there are more of us to house.

The governments Planning Inspectors have recommended that 62,500 new houses need to be built between 2006 and 2026 in the Nottingham area.

Councils join forces

Ashfield, Broxtowe, Erewash, Gedling, Nottingham City and Rushcliffe Council’s say they have joined forces to work together to make sure that this new housing is developed only in the most sustainable locations.

They councils say this means that housing is only built in areas that are connected by the transport networks, with sufficient supporting services such as jobs, health services, shops and adequate new parks.

Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment

They also say that in order to achieve this and minimise development in greenfield areas, the Councils are together undertaking a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment Study. The end result of this information gathering exercise will be a clearer factual, picture on which development options are the most sustainable.

The councils added that the study will be followed by wide ranging consultation before the Councils choose preferred options for development giving everyone, including the public the chance to have a say.

The Councils will be keeping the public up to date on the progress of this study, which is likely to be completed by April 2008.
