Cyclists targeted and fined
06 July, 2007
The police operation, which ran yesterday July 5, came after two separate incidents where elderly women were knocked over and injured by people on pushbikes.
Two other pensioners were also injured by cyclists earlier this year in March.
Beeston town centre beat manager Pc Ben Rosser and a number of Police Community Support Officers conducted high visibility patrols, issuing fixed penalty notices to anyone cycling illegally.
The operation was also supported by Beeston CCTV operators.
PC Rosser said: “These may seem like minor offences in the grand scheme of things, but they could have serious consequences.
“So far, four elderly women have been hospitalised with nasty hip and leg injuries. Thankfully, the women only received minor injuries but cyclists need to ride responsibly and abide by the rules of the road.”
The operation also targeted drivers who parked illegally within Beeston town centre and the surrounding area. Two motorists who parked on zigzags or double yellow lines were fined.
Pc Rosser added: “Motorists who park on double yellow lines or stop in no stopping zones cause congestion and delays. These minor traffic offences cause no end of aggravation for other road users and stop them from going about their daily business.”
