Job losses as Ericsson pulls out of Beeston

ericsson-leave-beeston Ericsson the global telecommunications company have announced they are to end the lease at their Beeston site.

The Swedish firm, which specialises in high speed telecom networks said it will end the lease later this year, in order to merge into a new centre in Ansty, Coventry.

As part of a global cost-cutting exercise, Ericsson are they are ‘laying off’ 147 staff in the coming months from the Beeston site and the remaining 168 workers will be offered places in Coventry.

Consult individual staff

The company will consult with union and individual staff over the next three months.

Unite National Officer, Peter Skyte, said: “Ericsson is in danger of tarnishing its reputation as a world class company and leading investor in R & D in the UK with its decision to close the Beeston site employing 350 people.

“We will be pressing the company to demonstrate its continuing commitment to future investment in high tech skills and jobs in the UK and to maximise the opportunities for redeployment of the Beeston workforce to the company’s new Ansty site.”

"Bad News"

Nick Plamer MP said: “It's obviously bad news for all those affected, who face either looking for new work or at best being uprooted to Coventry.

“I've asked for a meeting as soon as possible with HSBC, who own the site, to get an update on their progress in attracting high-tech firms, potentially offering the right type of job for the staff affected.”
