Warning after Female Distraction Burglar strikes

18 June, 2008

female-distraction-burglar Nottinghamshire Police is urging residents to be vigilant after a female distraction burglar has called at several homes and asked to use the telephone before stealing valuable items.

Most recently the woman went to a home in Trowell, at around 9.30pm Monday June 16, and asked for a glass of water, as well as permission to use the phone.

The female homeowner left the woman, as she used the phone, but when she returned the distraction burglar had left and stolen a purse.

Another House

In a separate incident a woman called at another home in Trowell, at around 8.45pm, Sunday June 15, and claimed her car had broken down and said she needed to use the phone.

The woman then appeared to use the phone, however when she left the resident realised a handbag, which happened to be empty, had been taken.

House in Bramcote

At around 12.30, Sunday June 15, a woman went to a house in Bramcote, and claimed her car had run out of petrol and she needed to use the phone.

When the distraction burglar left the homeowner noticed a purse had been taken.

Officers are investigating and hope to obtain a better description of the female burglar, who is white.

”Lone female”

Detective Inspector Martin Putnar said: “These distraction burglaries are slightly unusual in that lone female appears to be involved.

“However the woman appears to be intent on stealing valuables and I would urge all residents to be extra vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police immediately.

“The best way to protect yourself is simply by not opening your door to anyone who hasn’t pre-arranged a visit.

“Alternatively use a security chain to find out what these people want before opening or shutting the door.

“If you suspect anything simply do not open your door, if you don’t allow these thieves to enter your home they cannot steal anything. Then call the police.”
