Trowell's Festival Inn owners fined
02 February, 2008
Broxtowe Borough Council have successfully prosecuted the Spirit Group Limited in connection with food hygiene offences at the Festival Inn, Ilkeston Road, Trowell, Nottingham.
In November 2006 an Environmental Health Officer visited the premises to undertake a routine food hygiene inspection and found the kitchen and other areas associated with operation of the food business to be in a dirty and poorly maintained condition.
Findings
Floor surfaces underneath the cooking range and the pot wash area were filthy. The male and female changing facilities and sanitary conveniences were in a poor state of repair and unacceptable condition. The walk-in freezer had spilt food within it and areas of the floor and ventilation unit were heavily iced.
The general conditions of the premises demonstrated that food handlers were not aware of fundamental food hygiene requirements and that the management supervision was poor.
Pleaded guilty to six offences
At a hearing at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Monday, January 28, The Spirit Group Limited pleaded guilty to six offences under the European Hygiene of Foodstuffs Regulations. They were fined a total of £5,250 and ordered to pay costs of £2,346.61. In summing up, the District Judge said that the situation was a problem, "waiting to happen".
The Court heard that the Festival Inn is now under new management with a completely new team of employees. The Council’s Environmental Health Officer has observed a marked improvement in the standards since the arrival of the new staff.
