Fire-fighters visit learners
25 May, 2007
Crews from Beeston fire station visited the main Castle College campus in Beeston during lunchtime on Monday, May 21 to talk to students about the dangers of cooking, smoking and driving after drinking alcohol.
The messages were reinforced with a demonstration of a hot oil fire carried out by the crew, and leaflets were available in a range of different languages including Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese and English.
Later fire-fighters and members of the Community Safety team from Central staged a chip pan fire demonstration at Castle College, Carlton Road, highlighting to students the dangers of cooking under the influence of drugs or drink.
Community Safety Advocate Michelle Fitzpatrick said: “Students are often so preoccupied with their studies and a busy social life that they pay little attention to safety. As part of Adult Learners Week, we have been talking to students about how to stay safe, and pointing out the dangers of cooking with hot oil, carelessly discarding or falling asleep with a lit cigarette and driving. All of these dangers are increased when alcohol has been consumed.
“After watching the hot oil demonstration and hearing about the dangers associated with many of the things they do on a daily basis, we hope that the students will take away some important safety advice which they will then put into practice for themselves.”
