Fireworks Amnesty Underway

25 October, 2007

A fireworks amnesty launched by fire-fighters and partner agencies in the run up to Bonfire Night last year proved so successful that it is being repeated this year.

A total of 45 kg of damaged, dangerous, discarded or confiscated fireworks was safely disposed of during the amnesty, thanks to partnership working between Stapleford and Beeston fire stations, Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Trading Standards, Broxtowe Safer Communities Partnership and Crescendo Fireworks.

Joining Forces

This year fire-fighters are again joining forces with Nottinghamshire Police, Trading Standards and Crescendo Fireworks, and are hoping that this year’s amnesty will achieve similar success - not only in the run up to Bonfire Night but all year round.

Stapleford Watch Manager Ray Burton said: “We launched the amnesty on fireworks last year to try and make the streets of Broxtowe safer for all local residents.

“Fireworks can be great fun and are a fantastic sight when used safely and responsibly as part of an organised display. But in the wrong hands they can be fatal, especially when used in an anti-social manner.

"Disposed of"

“We’re inviting people to bring any old, damaged, unwanted or discarded fireworks to us and we’ll make sure they are disposed of in the correct manner, keeping them off the streets.

“We’d also like to remind people that anyone caught using fireworks in an antisocial manner, or any under 18s found to be in possession of fireworks, will have them confiscated by the Police.”

As part of the amnesty, Crescendo Fireworks will also dispose of any fireworks bought as ‘test purchases’ during spot checks by Trading Standards officers.

Fireworks can be taken to Stapleford Fire Station on Mondays between 9 am and 11 am, or between 7 pm and 9 pm.

Alternatively, telephone 0115 943 0666 to arrange collection. Anyone who has any questions regarding the safe use of fireworks, or would like to find out more about the fireworks amnesty, should telephone Beeston Fire Station on 0115 943 0666.
