M1 Roadworks update

26 January, 2008

Work to reduce congestion and improve safety by widening the M1 between Junction 25 at Sandiacre and Junction 28 at Pinxton in the East Midlands begins in earnest.

To limit any delays to drivers the Highways Agency will be keeping three lanes open in each direction during the day, and will not be using a contraflow.

The first major change to the motorway layout will be the introduction of narrow lanes on the southbound carriageway between junction 27 and junction 26 from Sunday, 27 January.

From the night of Saturday, 26 January, also on the southbound carriageway, a 24-hour 50mph speed limit will be introduced for the safety of drivers and roadworkers.

Average speed safety cameras will be in operation between Junctions 26 and 27.

To protect the workforce, a temporary barrier will be installed along the southbound carriageway.

Work will start on Monday, 28 January for nine nights, Monday to Fridays only, and will reduce the southbound carriageway to one lane each night.
