Man jailed after Bramcote Burglary

17 October, 2007

A man has been jailed indefinitely after threatening a retired couple with a gun during a burglary.

It happened at approximately 6am on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at a property on Latimer Drive, Bramcote.

Sulayman Cham, aged 20, from Linsdale Close in Nottingham admitted climbing through the couple’s bedroom window while they were asleep and threatening them with a handgun. He made them show him around the house before stealing property including their car.

Cham appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, September 21, 2007 and pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary. He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, October 12, 2007 and was jailed indefinitely but in the interest of public protection won’t be considered for parole for three years and four months.

“Counselling”

Investigating officer Dc Darran Owen said: “This crime has had a serious impact on the victims who have had to receive counselling for the trauma of being woken up at gunpoint.

“Anyone who possesses a firearm in Nottingham should expect to be severely dealt with by the police and the courts.”

The victims, Mr and Mrs Dennis, have issued the following statement: "We would like to thank the police for the speed in which they arrested the criminal.

“End is in sight”

“Today this criminal has started his sentence, so he knows that the end is in sight. When this man entered our home, threatened our lives and stole our possessions it devastated us and our family, we can see no end to our trauma and stress. It is unbelievable that law-abiding people are not safe in their home or in their beds.

“We will be seeing our MP and other bodies for reassurance on how gun and violent crime is being dealt with. We would like to give a special thanks to Detective Darran Owen for the support and help he has given us."

“Secure Justice”

Reviewing lawyer, Julie Swift-Rollinson of Nottinghamshire Crown Prosecution Service added: “This was an extremely terrifying incident which continues to affect the lives of the victims.

“We have worked closely with Nottinghamshire Police to secure justice in this case and hope that Cham’s imprisonment comes as some comfort to them.”
