26 July, 2007

Nottinghamshire Police have prosecuted the first person for drinking in Beeston’s alcohol-free zone.

Barry John Smith, 41, of Sawley, Derbyshire, is alleged to have been drunk and disorderly in the Churchyard in Beeston on Thursday, June 28. The area became an alcohol-free zone in March.

He is also charged with failing to comply with an instruction from a Police Community Support Officer to hand over alcohol, being drunk and disorderly and assaulting an officer.

PC Dave Banner from the Beeston Neighbourhood Policing team said: “People failing to comply with an officer’s request to hand over alcohol could face an on the spot fine, or arrest and prosecution.”
