Members are able to learn the skills of kayaking and gain the confidence of being on the water and the sessions are taken in a controlled pool environment by a qualified skilled instructor.
Addiitonal sessions for people with disabilities have been set up by Broxtowe Borough Council as people have become more interested in trying out and learning skills in more extreme sports such as kayaking and climbing.
Feedback
Following feedback from those who attend the Barncroft Day Centre, Beeston it was decided to organise and run a kayak club.
The sessions have been taking place since October 2008 with great success. There have been a total of 11 attendees from the centre and all the members have a learning disability and some also have a physical or sensory impairment.
Even though the sessions have been running for a short period of time the participants have gained skills and water confidence very quickly. It’s hoped that they will be ready to move to open water in the summer.
The sessions take place on Thursdays between 11am and 12.25pm on a weekly basis during term time only and cost just £2 with a valid Broxtowe Leisure Centre.
