New Mayor for Borough

25 May, 2007

new-mayor At the Annual Council Meeting on 16th May 2007, Councillor Brian Wombwell was elected as Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe for the Civic Year 2007/08.

is from Nottingham but was born in Scotland in 1943 where his father was stationed. At the end of the war, the family returned to Nottingham moving to Bramcote when he was 11 where he attended People’s College.

In 1966 Brian married Christine and they moved to Stapleford and raised a family of three children, Simon, Sally and Philip.

The children all attended Albany Infants and Junior Schools (where Brian is currently a Governor) and the The Park Comprehensive before going on to Higher Education.

Brian has recently retired from working as a Contracts Engineer in the Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning Industry.

Brian was first elected onto Stapleford Town Council at a by-election in 1996 and has been Leader of the Town Council for the past seven years.
He became the first Liberal-Democrat Mayor of Stapleford in 1999, which he enjoyed immensely. Both he and Christine were elected onto the Borough Council in 1999.
In 2003 Brian became Chair of the Planning and Community Development Select Committee.
In 2005 Brian’s role changed when he was appointed chair of the Resources Select Committee. He has also served on numerous other committees including the Planning Committee (now Development Control) for the past eight years.
In 2005 Brian was elected to the Nottinghamshire County Council, representing Stapleford and Bramcote, and as a consequence retired from full time work so that he can dedicate more time to his various Council activities.

The Civic role is a familiar one for Brian as Christine was installed as Mayor of the Borough in 2004 and Brian accompanied her as her Escort. They both enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to another year as the Civic representatives for the Borough of Broxtowe.
