Nuisance Bikers Targeted

24 May, 2007

Nuisance bikers in Toton, Stapleford and Bramcote are the targets of a police operation.

Operation Still has run from April to reduce the number of complaints made by residents about nuisance vehicles and will focus on the areas where most incidents have been reported.

Activity will focus around Toton Sidings and the Moor Lane Bridleway/Coventry Lane area of Bramcote, as well as other parts of Stapleford and Bramcote which are suffering problems to a lesser extent.

PC Paul Matthews, who organised the operation, says: “Many of the complaints we receive are about scrambler bikes and scooters being ridden by youths aged between 17 and 25-years-old. The bikes tend to be noisy, which can affect the quality of life for residents, and ridden at great speed along pathways and bridleways.
“There are obvious dangers involved as these tracks are popular with walkers and cyclists. Many of the bikes involved, especially those being used off road, tend to be unlicensed and unroadworthy.”

Complaints about nuisance vehicles this year are down on the same period last year, between January to April from 133 to 90.
However, nuisance bikes are still a great concern for local residents and high visibility patrols will be made by police officers and police community support officers on mountain bikes, with the support of the off-road motorcycle team at key times.
