PDSA launches £1m festive appeal
12 November, 2008
Website: www.pdsaappeal.org.ukLeading veterinary charity PDSA has launched an urgent yuletide appeal which aims to raise nearly £1million to help treat thousands of sick and injured pets over the 12 days of Christmas.
PDSA vets treated 18,533 poorly pets during Christmas last year – an all time record for the charity.
And PDSA predicts that Christmas 2008 will be another record breaker, so has launched an urgent appeal for donations to help treat poorly pets throughout the festive season. If the numbers of pets treated are the same as last year, PDSA will need to raise £947,000 in time for Christmas.
PDSA Head of Marketing, John Cole, said: “Over the past year there has been a lot of talk about the credit crunch and possible recession, and when times are hard for people, they’re hard for our pets too. “This Christmas, we predict there will be more pets than ever whose owners just cannot afford the treatment they desperately need.”
As well as proving free veterinary treatment to the pets of people in need, PDSA promises to help any animal that is brought into a PetAid hospital in a life-threatening emergency. Pets are always put before pounds, so the charity urgently needs donations to keep going.
John continues: “Just £10 would pay for 50 metres of bandages to help mend poorly paws and £37 will pay for a day’s worth of gas and electricity at one of our 47 PetAid hospitals. Due to escalating energy costs, this figure is 50 per cent higher than last year and our medicines, dressings and equipment have all increased in price too.
“Supporters are being urged to dig deep and give a gift to PDSA and help us cope with whatever this Christmas may bring.”
