Town Centre Plans Unveiled

09 August, 2007

Members of the public are being invited to have their say on the newly-published proposals for how Beeston town centre could develop over the next decade.

Recognising that the centre needs to be able to expand, the Council and its partners engaged consultants Atkins to produce a Masterplan to consider the options for how this should be done. This work for the Council has now reached its Preferred Options stage.

Comments

A leaflet and comments form about the proposals are being distributed and there is a display at Beeston Library and in the Borough Council offices.

Information is also on the council’s website. Comments are requested by Friday, September 21.

All the feedback from this stage in the process will help to shape the final version of the Plan.

Plans

The Town Centre Plan accommodates the NET tramline through the centre but it is stressed that the Plan’s proposals could go ahead with or without the tram.

The Square shopping precinct would be redeveloped and expanded to provide additional retail units. There are various options for creating extra parking areas around the centre, to replace the multi-storey car park.

The Square would continue to be a main public open space in the centre of Beeston, expanded and adjoining the green area around the church. This will provide a visual link with the attractive Conservation Area based on the historic parts of the town.

The pedestrianised section of the High Road would be extended to Regent Street and accordingly City Road and Derby Street would need to have changed access arrangements.

The Plan suggests that additional apartments and leisure uses should be introduced into the town centre.
