Ever wondered what lurks at the bottom of a pond?
As part of the ‘fun with learning’ programme the Friends of Colliers Wood are hosting a free Family Pond-dipping Event at Collier’s Wood, Engine Lane, Moorgreen on Saturday, May 17, at 10am through to 3pm.
Exploring pond life is great fun and pond-dipping at Colliers Wood is a perfect place to find out all about the exciting indigenous animals and plants that live in our local pond. Friends of Collier’s Wood will be on hand to help find and explain all of the creatures discovered during the day.
Notebook
Pond dippers don’t need any special equipment and a net, tray and identification sheet will be available to use but everyone is advised to bring a notebook and a pencil to record all their sightings.
Wellingtons and jeans are the order of the day and all children under 16 must to be accompanied by an adult. Families and friends can make it a day out and bring along a picnic to enjoy in the beautiful surrounding area.
Collier’s Wood was the former site of Moorgreen Colliery, which was closed in 1985 and is now a community woodland which forms part of the Greenwood Community Forest in Nottinghamshire.
Thousands of Trees
The site was seeded with wild grasses and flowers. Hedgerows and thousands of trees were planted and two ponds created which have become valuable habitats for wildlife.
Friends of Colliers Wood is a group of local people interested in the woodland, acting as a link between the community who use the area and Broxtowe Borough Council who manage the woodland. Friends of Colliers Wood actively encourage and promote community involvement in many ways within the woodland.
