30 March, 2008

posthumous-military-cross-chilwell-soldier The Chilwell Soldier who was killed last September, while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan, has been awarded a posthumous Military Cross.

Sergeant Craig Brelsford from The 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters), died while on a tour of duty on Saturday, September 8, 2007.

Sergeant Brelsford had been taking part in a pre-planned operation to disrupt Taliban activity, south of Garmsir, southern Helmand Province, when their patrol was attacked by enemy fighters.

Placed himself between the enemy and the casualties

Sergeant Brelsford was given the award for his involvement in the same engagement as Lieutenant Cupples.

When tasked to assist Lieutenant Cupples's section in evacuating four casualties from a killing area with Taliban firing positions on two sides, Brelsford quickly assessed the situation. He placed himself between the enemy and the casualties and created a protective screen for them.

While providing inspiration and encouragement to some very frightened young soldiers, he was critically injured but he continued to command his men.

Only once he was in the safety of a Viking vehicle did he stop, and sadly he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Professional skill and Courage

Brelsford displayed leadership, professional skill and courage of the very highest order.

Sergeant Craig Brelsford of A (Grenadier) Company, 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters), was born on 16 September 1981. He was also a former pupils at Bramcote Hills School.

181 members of the Armed Forces and three MOD civilians have been honoured for their courage and professionalism on operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world.

Five Conspicuous Gallantry Crosses, five Distinguished Service Orders, 28 Military Crosses, and three Distinguished Flying Crosses have been awarded in the honours list for the period April 1, 2007 to September 30, 2007.
