Prisms to warn drivers of road closures
04 February, 2008
The Highways Agency is to introduce new signs as part of improvements to its network of driver diversion signs.
The new "Prism" signs consist of a number of prism sections which can be turned round to display one of three different pre-set messages.
Activated from local control centre
The signs will be activated from a local control centre when an incident closes a trunk road and will show a diversion route and accompanying symbol for road users to follow.
The prisms sign can be attached to an electronic variable message sign, which will then give drivers additional information, such as where exactly an incident is on a particular road.
”Shining Example”
Highways Agency Route Manager Jim Allcock said: "This is a shining example of the Highways Agency using innovative technology to inform drivers and help keep them up to date on road closures, so that they can make informed decisions about their journeys.
“This important work will ensure motorists have a clearly signed diversion route to follow if incidents close sections of the A1, A52 or A46.
“It will reduce the risk of drivers getting lost or using unsuitable routes, and hopefully improve the quality of life for people living in small villages that may suffer from rat-running."
