A budding young chef from Stapleford has become a finalist in the National Junior Chef of the Year 2008 competition. Edward is a pupil at George Spencer School in Stapleford, and is studying for GCSEs, one of them food technology.

Entrants for the competition were required to design and cost a menu for three people. The live final is to be held in May 2008 with celebrity chef judge, Gary Rhodes.

Promising Start

And the 15-year-old has also made a promising start to a career in catering after he, graduated from the Junior Pastry Chef's programme which is held at Clarendon's Newstead Restaurant, part of New College Nottingham.

Edward first showed potential while working alongside culinary legend, Sat Bains, and Head Chef, John Freeman, at the Michelin Star Restaurant Sat Bains.

Edward secured the experience of a lifetime after winning a competition open to all Junior Chef and Junior Pastry Chef Academy graduates.

Sat Bains believes Edward displays immense promise: “It was great to get Edward into the kitchen. For a young man of 15, he shows great potential. He listens and learns quickly, he is passionate about food and cooks from the heart. I sincerely hope he fulfils his ambitions.”

JCA Programme

The Junior Chefs Academy (JCA) programme was developed by Compass to attract and develop young talent in the hospitality sector.

An ongoing programme with New College Nottingham, it provides young people at school with a unique opportunity of testing out their potential career path in a realistic working environment.

The 14-16 years old Junior Chefs and Junior Pastry Chefs had spent the previous ten Saturday mornings learning basic cooking techniques and principles.

Three course lunch

The course culminated with the graduation event where JCA students demonstrated their new skills by preparing a three-course lunch under the watchful eye of their friends, family, and special guest John Heppell MP.

After the meal, Michelin Star chef Sat Bains presented the students with medals and certificates.
