Residents urged to secure their property
23 May, 2008
In the past month 40 homes across Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe, have been burgled after thieves have simply walked in through insecure doors or climbed in through open windows.
Most recently thieves accessed a second floor flat in Chilwell via an open window, at around 10am Wednesday May 21, 2008, and stole a playstation and television.
”Exploit the easy opportunities”
Detective Inspector Martin Putnar said: “Unfortunately thieves exploit the easy opportunities presented unwittingly but often carelessly by the law abiding community.
“Burglars would sooner enter a house by going through an unlocked door or window than kick a door in and leave forensic evidence.
“During the summer months and the warmer weather it is tempting to leave doors and windows open, however to minimise the chances of becoming a victim it is imperative residents take the time to ensure their property is safe and secure.”
Close and lock
In an effort to stop these crimes Nottinghamshire Police is advising residents to close and lock all the house doors and windows when they leave their property and hide wallets, keys and cash from view.
DI Putnar added: “If you spot anyone suspicious looking into homes or hanging around properties I would ask you call the police immediately.
“The quicker we receive the information the quicker we can respond and hopefully apprehend these offenders.”
