New Crossing bleepers turned off

03 October, 2007

TRAFFIC signals at the Roach in Stapleford have been refurbished.

Works carried out involved renewing all the old equipment and putting in new style ‘nearside’ pedestrian indicators.

As part of this, tactile rotating cones underneath the pedestrian push button units have been installed. These cones rotate when the green man appears giving an indication to visually impaired pedestrians that it is safe to cross.

The green man and rotating cones have also been enhanced by the enabling of the audible signals (bleepers).

Silent

However, these have now been turned off again as they threw up a new problem.

Andy Kirk, the Traffic Engineering Systems and Data Manager of the Highways Division Communities of Nottinghamshire County Council told NG9: “This latter point has raised an issue relating to the uncontrolled route from Toton Lane to Derby Road.

“We need to assess whether the provision of the audibles will have an adverse affect on pedestrians crossing this route so in the interim the audibles will be turned off.

”Looking at Options”

“We are looking at options to provide the most appropriate solution which ideally will allow the reintroduction of the audible signals.”

A disabled Stapleford resident told NuNews: “It’s an awful shame for the people who have waited so long for this modern innovation, to make it safer to cross the road.

“I hope that a suitable solution can be found that suits everyone.”
