06 August, 2007
The improvements will reduce queue lengths at what was the most congested junction in the region and offer safety benefits to pedestrians and cyclists using new signalised crossings.
Highways Agency project sponsor Kam Khokhar said: "We are pleased to have completed this improvement scheme ahead of schedule and thank road users and local residents for the patience and understanding during the works.
"Bardills Roundabout was the most congested junction in the region. The works we have carried out will bring a much needed improvement. Computerised traffic lights that adjust to traffic flows, have been installed on the roundabout to reduce delays particularly in the morning and evening peak periods.
More Vehicles
The A52 and Stapleford Lane approaches to the roundabout have been widened from two to three lanes allowing more vehicles to get through when the lights are green.
"Signalised crossings have been installed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists who at present have to wait for gaps in the traffic, and a short link road has been built through the roundabout to give drivers coming from the direction of Derby and the M1 a dedicated right turn towards Toton onto the B6003.
Road users are also advised that the speed limit has been reduced from 70mph to 40mph for safety reasons all approaches to Bardill's roundabout and a CCTV camera installed to help respond to any incidents or congestion in the area.
