Couple guilty of unnecessary suffering to cat
03 August, 2007
John (26/12/1941) and Shariefa England (03/01/1968), of Clarkes Lane, Beeston, Nottingham were fined £300 and £100 respectively and each ordered to pay costs of £500 after being found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to their cat in November 2006.
Miaow the cat was taken to a vet in December 2005 with a broken and infected hind leg which had been splinted with lollipop sticks and wrapped in parcel tape. The grey tabby had been taken to a vet the week before, but was taken away again after Mr England was told it would cost £500 to have the injured leg amputated.
RSPCA Inspector Joanna Pearson said: "I hope the sentence will have made Mr and Mrs England think twice about treating an animal themselves.
"People must make sure they can pay for veterinary treatments and think about insurance. If they can't afford it they should contact the RSPCA or the PDSA for help."
Miaow the cat was re-homed through the RSPCA Radcliffe-on-Trent Animal Shelter.
