Here’s what our reviewers say:

“The Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni is on until Saturday, May 17 at the Nottingham Arts Theatre.

Truffaldino, a poor servant, with a big appetite, is employed by two masters each paying him a salary. That his two masters are the engaged but tragically separated young lovers (Florindo and Beatrice) adds to the fun. Throw in the sexy maid (Smeraldina) who turns Truffaldino’s head and the excitable Pantalone and pompous Dr Lombardi father’s of the betrothed.

The set was very simple the façade of an inn with louvered windows at the top and three doors at ground level, through which Truffaldino flounced with great gusto.

Nick Paley was superb as Truffaldino. From his first entrance on the stage he gave a leer and with calculated eye contact immediately establishes that he is playing both to the audience and the stage. One of the funniest moments in the play is when Truffaldino who has opened a letter meant for his master tries to repair the seal with chewed bread.

David Shackleton brought great energy into his role of Pantalone. His excitable manner and quick mincing movements were extremely comical.

The actors were all well cast in their parts, and the interaction between them all was good.

This is an extremely funny play with a few topical lines thrown in. It has the elements of a pantomime and a farce and the pace was extremely fast. The programme stated that you would leave the theatre with a smile on your face and how right they were.
