Water customers to benefit from new trunk main
17 January, 2008
The 12.6 kilometre-long water main will boost supplies to 190,000 customers in the Beeston, Stapleford, Clifton, Bramcote, Chilwell, Wollaton, West Bridgeford, Ruddington and Tollerton areas by creating a new link between the company’s Church Wilne water treatment works and Clifton.
Engineers have reached a critical point in the project where the 600mm diameter pipe is being laid alongside the A453.
Minimise traffic disruption
This involves two crossings over the busy commuter route which are being done at night to try and minimise any traffic disruption, however, it is still anticipated that delays can be expected.
Alan Payne, Severn Trent’s asset delivery distribution manager, explained: “We’ve already laid about 6.5 kilometres of the pipe so far, but we are now hitting the bit that is to have the most direct effect on traffic heading from the motorway, along the A453 into Nottingham.
”A huge scheme"
“It is a huge scheme and one that we are aware could cause serious traffic problems. However, we have consulted the highways department extensively and, by working at night and keeping in the verge as much as we can, we hope to reduce the disruption to an absolute minimum.”
“We are committed to boosting our network of underground pipes to make sure we have a more flexible, efficient water supply for our customers in Nottingham.”
Work on the A453 is scheduled to continue until March 2008.
