Speedwatch on track for Stapleford
06 July, 2007
‘Community Speed Watch’ enables volunteers to work within the community to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and to help control the problem locally.
Civilian operators use radar guns to check the speeds of motorists and sees fully-trained volunteers noting drivers who break the law by exceeding the speed limit through the town.
These volunteers would be initially trained by Nottinghamshire Police and at least six volunteers is needed to make a scheme viable.
Hot spots for speeding in Stapleford include Moorbridge Lane, Pasture Road, Church Street, Hickings Lane and Toton Lane.
The idea of the campaign is focused on acting as a visual deterrent, rather than catching speeding motorists.
Use of the radar devices will not lead to prosecution – drivers will receive a letter from the police instead, which will help underline the community’s commitment to reducing speed.
