Councils takes on responsibility of stray dogs
03 April, 2008
From Sunday, April 6, Broxtowe Borough Council will be providing a 24-hour, call-out service to deal with stray dogs.Due to a change in legislation, the Police will no longer be dealing with stray dogs although they will continue to be responsible for dangerous dogs and dogs pestering livestock.
Neighbourhood Wardens
The Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens will now cover the out of hours strays with the back up of an answer machine service to ensure all calls are dealt with as soon as possible.
Anyone who wants to report a stray should contact 0115 917 3691 any time day and night and the on-call Neighbourhood Wardens will respond.
£4 million a year
All local authorities in England and Wales are now having to provide this service or something similar and £4 million a year is being split between all local authorities in England and Wales to cover the cost.
It is a legal requirement for dog owners to have their pet carry an identity tag attached to a collar while it is in a public place.
