On Thursday, April 24, at 8pm, Verve, the Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s graduate performance company, will present a stunning evening of original dance.
Featuring some of the UK’s most talented young dancers, Verve will perform specially-commissioned work from leading international choreographers. Between them they have created a physically and emotionally intense programme of new dance works.
In The New Breeds, Jerwood Award for Choreography winner Carol Brown explores our digital evolution in a world in which people are increasingly reliant on technology.
Inspired
Darshan Singh Bhuller was inspired by the life and works of the Baroque painter Carvaggio for his piece Exile and Death.v Carvaggio’s life was marked by remarkable advances in painting as he abandoned the structures that had guided artists for centuries. Alongside this, he also spent much of his life imprisoned for several violent assaults.
Award-winning Nigerian/Welsh choreographer Henri Oguike’s Thought Like Raindrop was created in collaboration with the dancers and the school’s staff.
Strong Links
Simon Birch is a national and international choreographer with strong links with the school. His piece, March, contemplates the cyclical power of time and examines the self-contained nature of an isolated moment - like a bright sunny day in the middle of winter: emotionally uplifting yet fragile and fleeting.
Verve has an exciting and fresh company of 11 young dancers, many of whom have previously studied at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. This unique institution offers professional dance training for students from all backgrounds.
This vibrant and entertaining evening of dance will be the best place for the public to spot up-and-coming UK dance artists and promises something to delight everyone from dance enthusiasts to new fans.
Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions), available from Derby Dance Box Office on 01332 370911.
