Thieves strip lead from Salvation Army roof

01 April, 2008

thieves-strip-lead-salvation-army Heartless thieves have stolen lead pieces from the roof of the Salvation Army Citadel in Albert Avenue, Stapleford.

Although the theft was discovered late last week, it is thought the incident happened sometime over the Easter holidays when the hall was being used less than normal, as many of the groups using it, run during term time only.

”Made secure”

A spokesman for the Salvation Army, told NG9: “It was discovered late last week that four pieces of lead were taken from the roof. However, it has now been patched and made secure.

“The police are looking in to the matter.”

”An absolute disgrace”

A member of the congregation, added: “It is an absolute disgrace, it has disrupted many of the groups that meet in the hall such as the parents and toddlers group, Home League and Beavers.

“The roof may have been made secure, but it is not weather proof and the rain is leaking in.”

However, it seems this sort of crime is one sweeping many parts of the country, as thieves strip millions of pounds' worth of metal off buildings, including hundreds of churches and other historic buildings with lead roofs, and then sell it for profit.
