Popular Head retires

26 July, 2007

A popular head teacher has retired from Toton Primary School after working there for the past 18 years.

Mike Barker, 60, joined Bispham Drive Junior School in 1989, becoming head six years later.

Under his leadership the school has been praised three times by Ofsted inspectors, awarded Beacon status by the Government and placed in The Times' list of top 100 schools.

Mr Barker left school at the age of 15 and went to work at British Rail in Derby as an apprentice.

He worked for the company for 17 years before deciding on a complete career change.

He taught at schools in Arnold and Chilwell before moving to Toton.
