Tree planted to commemorate special birthday

Photo shows: The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Sue Wildey and Moji Adeiga of AFRIK planting the tree.A tree has been planted in the Walled garden at Bramcote Hills Park to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela, Past President of South Africa.
Planted by the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Sue Wildey, the tree, a Liquidambar styraciflua (Sweet Gum) is marked by a plaque inscribed “Planted in 2008 to mark the 90th Birthday of Nelson Mandela. An inspiration to all who are oppressed and deprived.”
The Mayor was joined by Moji Adeiga of AFRIK. AFRIK's mission is to promote the development opportunities for Africans throughout the East Midlands of the UK. The overall goal of the project is to promote social cohesion, foster community relations, effective community participation by providing culturally appropriate support service for Africans in the region through the setting up of a dedicated African cultural and advice centre.
The tree is just one of those being planted as part of the Broxtowe Borough Council’s target to plant 100,000 trees over a five-year period as part of its Corporate Plan.
Already over 8,000 new trees have been planted and by the end of March the Council hopes to hit a target of 20,000.
