Trick or Treaters asked to be considerate

26 October, 2007

trick-or-treat-consider Trick or treaters are being reminded to be considerate to others and to take care while out and about.

Last year, nearly 100 extra calls about rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour across the county were made to the police on Halloween.

Intimidating

While most people find trick or treating harmless fun, others can find it intimidating.

Nigel Turner, who is in charge of crime reduction for South Nottinghamshire Division, says: “Most people don’t mind groups of children coming to the door but it can be quite scary for people who live alone or who are elderly or vulnerable.

”Not everyone enjoys Halloween”

“We’d ask anyone going trick or treating to remember that not everyone enjoys Halloween, and if someone asks you to leave, please do so without causing them distress.”

“Parents whose children are going trick or treating should ideally accompany them to keep an eye on them. If this isn’t possible, parents should make sure they know where their child is going and who they are with.”

“Homeowners should also take care when opening the door to strangers. We’d recommend using basic security precautions like a spy hole or a door chain to see who is at the door before fully opening it. Also make sure your back door is locked before opening the front door.”

Poster

A poster has been produced by Nottinghamshire Police that people can display in their windows if they don’t want to be visited by trick or treaters. These can be picked up from the front counters of Police Stations and contact points in the Gedling, Broxtowe and Rushcliffe boroughs.
