Tree planting in Park

23 November, 2007

An unusual tree is to be planted in Bramcote Hills Park.

In recognition of the valuable and very mature trees to be found around the Green Flag award winning Bramcote Hills Park, Broxtowe Borough Council, as part of the Tree Council’s National Tree Week from November 21 - December 2, is adding a new and unusual tree specimen to its current collection for visitors to enjoy.

The Foxglove Tree (Paulownia tomentosa) is this year’s special specimen and the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Brian Wombwell will be planting this new tree on Friday, November 30, at 11.30am.

The public are invited to come along and join the Mayor on this important occasion where there will be an opportunity for a guided tour with the Council’s Tree Officer around the existing parkland trees following the planting.

Sustainable Parkland

This is the second of what will be a series of annual plantings every autumn in the park to create an arboretum and ensure a sustainable parkland for future generations enjoy.

An arboretum is a collection of different species of trees and provides a wonderful environment for people to meet and enjoy and learn about trees that they may not normally come across from day to day.

Great tree collections have been a much loved feature of British parklands since the 17th century when explorer-botanists discovered and brought back strange and beautiful new trees from the far corners of the world.

Their prized collections grew as the years went by and many of the trees have long since outlived the people who introduced them, leaving behind a legacy in the form of an arboretum.
